Yesterday’s Gone: Why Tomorrow Holds the Key to Your Dreams

In the heart of a church in old town Gdansk, there’s one particular timepiece - shown in the picture above - which really brings new meaning to standing the test of time. After all, there aren’t that many 15th-century wooden clocks left in the world!  And just like this ancient clock moved steadily forward, I was reminded this week that time only flows in one direction.

This week, I faced a task I had been avoiding for months. It was something I had put off because I knew it would stir up my emotions I wasn’t ready to confront. Finally the moment arrived when I could no longer delay. As I drove to Aachen, I turned on Spotify and autoplay worked its magic. That’s when a long-forgotten personal favorite song came on - a song whose story was perfectly aligned with what I was confronted with. It was like rediscovering an old friend who knew exactly what to say.

This song has been a compass for me for two decades now. The first time I discovered it, back in 2004, I didn’t realize how deeply it would shape my life. The lyrics than felt like a gentle nudge to look forward, to dream bigger, and to implement the change I wanted. That nudge soon became bigger, pushing me to make major changes in my professional career in 2009, 2014 and again in 2021 - changes that enabled this journey as full-time travelers.  Without those turning points, we wouldn’t be living this life today.

I don’t share this to brag, but to reflect on how small steps - they seemed small then - can transform your life. We’re incredibly humbled and grateful to be able to call the road our home.  And as we sit still, resting and regrouping, there’s a feeling stirring inside us: the need to move again, the need to see new horizons, and the need to chase what’s next.

Just like the song says, "Don’t stop thinking about tomorrow."

The Road as a Metaphor for Growth

When I look back, the times I’ve felt most alive were the ones when I made bold moves forward. That’s what the song is all about. Not dwelling on the past, not staying stuck, but moving forward with hope and purpose.

Traveling isn’t just about changing scenery - it’s about changing perspective.

Every gravel path we take in our home on wheels, every offbeat stop we make with our motorcycle, every breathtaking sunset we witness is a reminder to never stop changing perspective. When we’re on the road, we embrace tomorrow instead of clinging to yesterday.

Yesterday’s Gone

As I reflect on the milestones that brought us here, I’m reminded how important it is to keep looking forward. "Yesterday’s gone, yesterday’s gone." It’s easy to feel trapped thinking about how things might have been different or to dwell on past choices and wonder, "What if?" But no amount of reflection can rewrite the past - the only direction that truly matters is forward, like the ancient clock in Gdansk. Looking backward doesn’t help us grow; it only keeps us stuck. The road ahead is where progress happens.

Do you as well have decisions in your past that you regret? We all do. But just like our RV, which has 12 gears to move forward and only one for reverse, the reverse gear is there for those moments when you’ve hit a roadblock or reached a dead end. With the reverse gear you can’t undo the things you’ve done. It’s a tool to help us reposition. Once you’ve realigned, the only way forward is onward. We have to keep moving.

What Do You Want Your Tomorrow to Look Like?

As we prepare to hit the road again, I want to leave you with this question: What do you want to change? What steps can you take - big or small - to move closer to the life you dream of?

I know not everyone can pack up their lives and travel like we do. Everyone has their own version of “hitting the road.” Maybe it’s a career change you’ve been scared to make, a passion project you’ve been putting off, or a healthier lifestyle you’ve been meaning to start.

Whatever it is, take Fleetwood Mac’s advice to heart:

"Why not think about times to come?
And not about the things that you’ve done."

It doesn’t have to be a huge leap right away. Most transformations happen with small, consistent steps. But sometimes, you’ll need to take a bigger step to truly move forward. Either way, the key is to move.

Never Stop Thinking About Tomorrow

Dreaming about tomorrow is what fuels us. It’s why we travel, why we take risks, and why we’re committed to sharing this journey with you.  Let’s promise each other this: to never stop thinking about what’s next, to never stop moving forward, and to never let yesterday hold us back.

What’s your tomorrow? And how will you start moving toward it today?  "Don’t stop. It’ll soon be here."

In our blog post next week, we will focus on our tomorrow, our changed plans for 2025. Stay tuned.
