As passionate travelers planning an extensive journey across the United States, we quickly realized that the standard three-month allowance for German citizens wouldn't suffice. From the rugged landscapes of Alaska to the desert vistas of Arizona and the bustling cities like San Francisco and Washington, there was just too much to see and experience in such a short timeframe. Not to mention, we were eager to reconnect with friends scattered across the country.

To extend our stay and deepen our exploration, we applied for a B2 visa, a non-resident visa that permits travelers to stay in the U.S. for up to six months continuously. The process involved a bit more than just paperwork; it required a personal appearance at the U.S. Embassy in Frankfurt.

Anticipating an early appointment at 7:30 AM, we decided to make the journey in our camper van, staying overnight at a quiet spot just 2km from the embassy. This not only eased the stress of early morning travel but also gave us a small taste of what our extended travels would be like.

The morning of our appointment, we cycled to the embassy, a decision that kept things simple and efficient. After going through the security check, we entered a large room where the process was straightforward but thorough. We provided our fingerprints, which was followed by an individual interview. The interviewer was particularly intrigued by our plans for overlanding across the U.S., asking detailed questions about our itinerary and motivations.

The interview was brief, lasting only about five minutes, but it was enough for the clerk to decide in our favor. We were thrilled when we were told that our visas had been granted. Two weeks later, we received our passports back with the new visas.

This successful application marked a significant milestone in our travel preparations, allowing us to plan a six-month adventure through the U.S. with peace of mind. We look forward to visiting numerous national parks, meeting up with friends, and immersing ourselves in the diverse cultures and landscapes that the United States has to offer. This visa not only opens doors to new experiences but also allows us to travel at a pace that suits our curiosity and desire for depth in our travels.
