As we take a break from our travels and settle into a quieter phase until February, we think about how focusing on experiences has changed our relationships.
This new lifestyle is about more than exploring new places; it’s also reshaped how we connect with the world and the people around us. By choosing experiences over routines, we’ve learned more about how friendships evolve when life takes a new direction. Our new lifestyle has revealed different types of friendships and the ways they evolve when life changes dramatically.
Our Anchor
Family remains a steady presence during this adventure. They stay connected with us, showing their support and interest in everything we experience. Regular phone calls are a special routine, a comforting link to home no matter where we are. These talks remind us of how deep our family ties are, giving us both strength and encouragement as we explore the world.
Genuine Interest from A Distance
Close friends occupy a space similar to family, though the interactions tend to be less frequent. Their interest in our travels remains genuine, and they follow our journey with their hearts and minds. Occasionally, we’ll receive a phone call, a WhatsApp message, or even a reaction to our blog posts. These responses often reveal what made them think, what resonated with them, or what sparked their interest from this shared "conversation." These moments remain a testament to the enduring bonds of friendship, even when physical distance separates us.
Work Friends: A Unique Transition
Reflecting on my final months at work, I noticed how relationships with colleagues shifted as I approached my departure. “Work friends” took on a new meaning, revealing the difference between connections that were purely transactional and those with a deeper foundation. As my role in the workplace ended, some interactions naturally faded, highlighting the professional nature of those relationships.
This realization wasn’t without its challenges. It was bittersweet to see that some bonds I had considered strong were tied to the shared goals of work. But this clarity was also liberating. It showed me which connections were genuine and which might endure beyond the boundaries of professional collaboration.
It reminds me of the friendship between Maverick and Goose from Top Gun. There are people out there, like Maverick, who still think of you even after you’ve stepped out of their daily lives. Luckily, I’m still around to reflect on this! Some of these “Mavericks” remain a part of your professional journey, leaving a lasting impact far beyond work projects. Recognizing these connections and appreciating their depth helps us see how meaningful these friendships truly are. For my Maverick(s) out there, I am glad I found you.
Life’s Natural Drift
Some friendships take a different path. The focus of the friendship often changes, reflecting the different priorities we each hold at this moment in time. This isn’t meant to harm the relationship; it’s simply a natural adjustment as life evolves.
We encountered a similar shift when we had our first child early in life. The dynamics of many friendships evolved then too, as our lives diverged between parenting and activities like partying, going to the cinema, or reading good books.
These differences in focus don’t diminish the relationship but rather reflect the diverse journeys we’re on. Over time, these priorities may align again, bringing some of those friendships closer once again.
A Familiar Parallel
This transition of friendships reminds Annika and myself of leaving university, when many friendships forged in that environment naturally drifted apart. Those friendships that endured were the ones with a deeper resonance, surviving the shifts of life. It’s not a bad thing; it’s simply a part of growth.
Seeing friendships evolve is like decanting good wine — it’s not about losing something, but about focusing on what matters most and bringing forward the essence of what’s truly valuable and enjoyable.
Friendship as a Journey
As our travels pause, we carry these reflections with us. Friendship, like travel, is a journey — one that evolves as we move through different phases of life. The connections that remain are those that have stood the test of time, distance, and change.
And as we prepare for the next leg of our journey, we’re grateful for the friends and family who continue to travel virtually with us, in spirit if not always in person.
To all those who’ve been part of our story so far: thank you. Whether through a phone call, a message, or simply following along, your presence has meant the world to us. As we pause posting on this blog until the end of January or early February, we look forward to reconnecting with you then, ready to share new adventures and create more memories together.
We wish you a wonderful Christmas full of joy and love, and a New Year filled with fresh opportunities and happiness.
